Solar Panel Quotes by Region

Solar quotes look alike, but the rules behind them change across the UK. Pick your region to see what to check before you sign.

Planning, funding and export rules are not the same across the UK. Each regional guide on this page shows the figures and rules that apply where you live. It also tells you what to ask each installer.

What changes from region to region

Output changes first. The European Commission’s PVGIS tool gives about 1,094 kWh per kWp a year for Canterbury, but about 918 kWh for Belfast, on the same pitch and losses. As a result, a payback claim that ignores your location deserves a question.

Check the planning rules for your nation before you sign, since they also differ across the UK.

Funding changes too. Scotland has Home Energy Scotland, and Wales has Nest and Green Homes Wales. The Smart Export Guarantee, however, covers Great Britain only, so it does not apply in Northern Ireland.

Choose your region

In England, start with the guides for London roofs, flats and conservation areas, South East output and grid operators and South West output and the 28-day grid notice. Northern and central England are covered by the North East guide, the North West guide, Yorkshire and the Humber quote checks, East Midlands quote checks, West Midlands quote checks and East of England quote checks.

Outside England, read about Welsh planning guidance, Nest and Green Homes Wales, Scottish permitted development and Home Energy Scotland and Northern Ireland’s separate grid and export rules.

Before you compare prices

First, learn what a full quote should contain with our guide to what belongs in a solar quote. Then use the line-by-line quote comparison so each price covers the same scope. Prices vary, so get written quotes and read each one in full before you sign.

When you are ready, the free enquiry form can match you with MCS-certified installers.
